I got back home really late last night so I broke my "every-day-blog-entry" goal already, but I guess that was a high expectation. But I broke it with good reason, because yesterday was packed. I went to class again for 3 1/2 hours, which was very interesting, I really like my professor. at 12:30 we were released, and me and a couple of others went to get "Doeners" which is really popular hear. Imagine a pita sandwich with lamb and german-vegetables inside. It was very good, I didnt expect to like it as much as I did. Then at 1 we met to go to Marksburg, which is the oldest remaining castle in Germany from the Middle Ages that has never been destroyed or rebuilt. It has a very long history of being seized and conquered by many different peoples. The Prussians actually took it during the 7 years war, but then sold it later back to Germany with the stipulation that it would remain a tool to teach people about life in the Middle Ages and castles.
I thought that this was a very "German" feature of the castle, since it is featured in Rumpelstiltskin and Sleeping Beauty.
Here is a picture of the Chapel inside the castle. You can see the head of Madonna at the bottom and there were faded paintings all over the walls.
Here is a picture of the bathroom. If you pan back a little, this room is literally right next to the formal dinning room, the door doesnt really even look very door. But I thought this was rather silly that it is so close to where everyone else is eating.
Here are some rather silly things as well. This is in the torture room, which is the oldest room in the entire castle. These devices that you see here are masks that you are forced to wear if you break certain rules. The one with the long nose on the left would be worn if someone slept with a married man (a little worse than a scarlet A I think) and the one that is larger on the right is for someone who gossips too much. People must wear this all the time and they are laughed at anytime they are in public. Also if the men were going on a quest, they would make their wives wear chastity belts, and if the girl did not oblige, she would be viewed as a prostitute. And these quests would often take place in the Middle East, which would be at the very least 5 years.
After this, we took about an hour bus ride to a vineyard. We got a tour of the barrels in the cellar, and some of them dated back to the 1800s. Outside there is grapevines everywhere, and they scale the mountains, The farmers take a tram to go up the hill to pick the grapes. We had a wine tasting and we also got a plate of cheese and meet and potato salad, all of the food was very organic and it was very filling, even though you wouldn't think of it as a full meal.
During the tasting, they announced that everyone would have to group with their home country and present a song to everyone. We did Yankee Doodle, then a couple of lines from Don't Stop Believing, and then we did Sir Mix-A-Lot Baby Got Back. It was fun, but all of the other countries were really cool too. It was fun to see people speaking in all of their home languages. After this, we went back to Bonn. One of the dorms was throwing a party so all of us went there, ergo me getting in very late.
*something I forgot to comment on the other day. When we were all in one of the lecture halls, some of the group leaders used whistles to get our attention, which they said was very German. I felt like one of the Von Trapp kids, it felt very silly to me.
**also, if people like the pictures in the blog I can do this more, I don't know if people would rather just read or if the pictures are enjoyable.
